"Britten's Lachrymae, was completely convincing and was given a wonderfully structured performance. The fact that Crabtree was living on the edge in some passages only added to the success. Then there were the 'new' pieces. The Sonata in D Major by Richard Walthew, with overtones of early Brahms, is a little gem; the Phantasy by Benjamin Dale is a huge masterpiece. Both works are out of print and all but unknown, but it was as if we were being introduced to a couple of the performer's friends - they were played lovingly with great warmth and understanding. These are truly two worthy additions to the repertoire. |
